Lucy Volkmar

Lucy is a literacy enthusiast who loves to talk about children’s books and geek out about early reading and writing. She has over a decade of experience in district and charter schools, with extensive experience designing and implementing academic programs, coaching teachers and leaders, and building adult investment during programmatic changes. Prior to co-founding Structured Literacy Solutions, Lucy served as a teacher, dean, principal, and network literacy leader at Achievement First, where she led her team to achieve over 40% point gains on the New York State ELA test in one year and match the ELA performance of New York State’s wealthiest districts. As a school leader, she retained over 90% of her staff every year by prioritizing strong school adult culture. Lucy holds a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, a MA from Pace University in General and Special Education, and a MA in literacy from Teachers College at Columbia University. She completed Relay Graduate School’s National Principal Fellowship program and the Aim Institute Pathways to Proficient Reading program and is a certified Wilson Fundations Level 1 and 2 facilitator and presenter. She has also been trained in The Hochman Method (The Writing Revolution), emotionally intelligent coaching by the Noble Story Group and Bright Morning, and Geodes readable texts. When she isn’t working, Lucy loves to spend time with her family and dogs and read mysteries.
